National Stripe Day

Friday, March 31, 2017

2017, spring, J.Crew, stripes, turtleneck, ruffles, pearls, patterns, OOTD,
Happy Friday everyone! What a crazy week! I am definitely ready for a quiet, relaxing weekend. Before we get to the relaxing though, let's talk about stripes and J.Crew.
2017, spring, J.Crew, stripes, turtleneck, ruffles, pearls, patterns, OOTD,
Today is National Stripe Day, per J.Crew, and I couldn't be more excited. First of all, I love stripes. Just in general, but also mixing different striped pieces and mixing stripes with different patterns. Stripes are just one of those classic details that give a little elegance and Parisian chic to any outfit- what's not to love about that?!
2017, spring, J.Crew, stripes, turtleneck, ruffles, pearls, patterns, OOTD,
I am also excited about today because I love J.Crew. Before you ask, no J.Crew is not paying me to say this, they aren't paying me at all. I genuinely love the J.Crew brand and their clothes.
2017, spring, J.Crew, stripes, turtleneck, ruffles, pearls, patterns, OOTD,
I started a few years ago just buying pieces from J.Crew here and there. Now, it seems like my whole closet is from there! Their clothes are great quality and pretty reasonable priced. Plus they have incredible sales...if you are a student and not using the student discount, you are missing out! It also doesn't hurt that their clothes are so cute and right up my aesthetic alley.
2017, spring, J.Crew, stripes, turtleneck, ruffles, pearls, patterns, OOTD,
The other thing I love about J.Crew is the people who work there. They are always nice and helpful, but I also feel like I have built relationships with these women over our mutual love of the J.Crew brand. Favorite store to shop at by far! Until next time, XO

Sparkles and Neon

Thursday, March 30, 2017

2017, spring, OOTD, travel, Rome, pink, neon, sparkly, J.Crew,
For me, spring and summer clothes are all about neons and sparkles. An outfit just doesn't seem complete without one or the other, or in this case, both!
2017, spring, OOTD, travel, Rome, pink, neon, sparkly, J.Crew,
My general rule for both of these is to keep it under control. I love using neon as a statement pop of color against an otherwise neutral outfit. This bag and belt are perfect to throw on and give an otherwise cute, but boring outfit that extra oomph. I also try and keep my neon to one color. Two hot pink accent items are ok, but you don't want to add neon yellow in the mix too. It's too much and you'll end up looking like an 80s highlighter.
2017, spring, OOTD, travel, Rome, pink, neon, sparkly, J.Crew,
As difficult as it is, moderation is also key for sparkles. I like to keep it to one section. If my necklace or jewelry in general is sparkly, no need to have a sparkly bag too. Same goes for if my shirt is sparkly. I will still wear jewelry, but it might be more subdued.
2017, spring, OOTD, travel, Rome, pink, neon, sparkly, J.Crew,
Well, now that we've talked about fashion a little, let's talk more about Rome. Our second day, Sunday, might have been our busiest day of the whole trip. We walked so much and saw so many amazing sites. We started at the Colosseum and did all of that, the Forum (which is right beside the Colosseum and there is only one ticket for both), and the Palatine Hill (you have to walk through the Forum to get to the top of the Hill). A definite must see if you've never been to Rome.
2017, spring, OOTD, travel, Rome, pink, neon, sparkly, J.Crew,
After lunch, we went to an art exhibition. This might sound crazy for the non-art obsessed readers out there, but the main reason I wanted to go to Rome last week was to see this particular art exhibition. It featured an artist named Artemisia Gentileschi, who happens to be one of the artists I wrote my thesis on! I had only seen one of her works previously and all of her works I discussed in my thesis were in this show! To say it was incredible would be an understatement and I ended up going to see it twice! It was one of those moments where life seems to align for just a second and everything all seemed to work out perfectly. It made me want to write another thesis too!
2017, spring, OOTD, travel, Rome, pink, neon, sparkly, J.Crew,
We finished up the day visiting the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain is awesome during the day, but I would recommend you visit at least once after dark because it is lit up and looks magical at night. We didn't stop moving all day it seemed, but it was a fabulous day. Until next time, XO

Mixing Black and Navy for Spring

Wednesday, March 29, 2017

2017, OOTD, spring, polka dots, J.Crew, navy, black,
Hello all! I hope your week has been fabulous so far! Mine has been crazy busy getting back into the swing of things after Rome, but it has definitely been nice to be back. Vacations are incredible, but it is always nice to come home and sleep in your own bed and get back to your routine.
2017, OOTD, spring, polka dots, J.Crew, navy, black,
As I mentioned, spring has definitely sprung here in North Carolina. Yesterday, it was almost 80 degrees! Spring is by far my favorite season because I love transitional clothing. It is always just the right amount of warmth that I don't freeze, but cool enough that I can still layer. Plus, by this time every year, I am absolutely sick of my winter wardrobe and ready for something new!
2017, OOTD, spring, polka dots, J.Crew, navy, black,
When I walked into work on Monday wearing this outfit, one of my coworkers immediately asked me how I managed to wear black and navy together and not look weird. My other coworker overheard and commented that I just decided they looked good together and walked out of the house.
2017, OOTD, spring, polka dots, J.Crew, navy, black,
As crazy as that sounds, mixing colors and patterns or trying new things is really that easy. When you decide you look awesome in an outfit, you carry yourself differently. You stand a little taller and strut your stuff a little more. With that going for you, no one will question your fashion choices, they will just comment on how great you look and admire your confidence.
2017, OOTD, spring, polka dots, J.Crew, navy, black,
The key for me when wearing anything, whether it's adventurous or a simple t-shirt in jeans, is to feel confident and beautiful. If you like what your are wearing, at the end of the day, does it really matter what any one else thinks? I don't think so! For once, prioritize yourself and wear what you want!
2017, OOTD, spring, polka dots, J.Crew, navy, black,
I know that can all be a little difficult sometimes though and it is helpful to have tangible tips in addition to my philosophical ramblings. So, when mixing black and navy, I always like to choose a darker shade of navy. That way, it is closer to black and they are similar tones. Mix it up with some neutral jewelry and don't try and over do it. Start easy with a navy top and a black cardigan or a black top and jeans. And then just add some gold earrings or a necklace.
2017, OOTD, spring, polka dots, J.Crew, navy, black,
We make wearing black and navy together so hard because it is an old stigma. But, black and navy want to go together! They look good against one another and normally once you start pairing them, it becomes incredibly easy to do so. Until next time, XO

Saying Goodbye to Winter with Pink and Fur

Monday, March 27, 2017

2017, OOTD, winter, over the knee boots, sparkly, fur, J.Crew, pink
Hello all! I can't believe spring is already here, 2017 is already flying by. It is even more unbelievable since two weeks ago, it was barely getting about freezing! So this is probably going to be my last winter outfit post until fall, which is perfect because this look includes so many things that were staples for me this winter.
2017, OOTD, winter, over the knee boots, sparkly, fur, J.Crew, pink
Between the over-the-knee boots, pink skirt, and sequined details, this outfit is everything I love about my winter clothes. Plus, I love these furry ear muffs, they are just too cute. They aren't very practical or necessary here in North Carolina, but I love them and try to wear them at least once every so often.
2017, OOTD, winter, over the knee boots, sparkly, fur, J.Crew, pink
The other thing I love about this outfit is the mix of textures. From the fur to the fuzzy scarf to the sequins to the wool skirt, there is such a variety of materials that play off each other so well. That is always the thing I miss most about winter clothes- layering things and creating interesting combinations. It is just so much easier to do when it's cold outside!
2017, OOTD, winter, over the knee boots, sparkly, fur, J.Crew, pink
As promised, this week I am going to tell you about Rome in addition to my outfit posts. So, let's drive right in. We arrived in Rome pretty early Saturday morning and as excited as we were to explore, both Kate and I were in desperate need of a nap after the uncomfortable flight. But after our naps, we were ready to go!
2017, OOTD, winter, over the knee boots, sparkly, fur, J.Crew, pink
That first day, we didn't do any set activities, but wandered around and I introduced Kate to the city (she'd never been to Rome before). It seems like we walked every where in Rome that first day! We started at our Air BnB right near the Pantheon. We then walked to Piazza Navona, Castel Sant'Angelo, the Vatican, St. Peter's Basilica, and ended up across the river in Trastevere (my favorite area of Rome and where I lived a couple of summers ago). Of course, for dinner, we started off our food tour on a high note with pizza and cannoli!

More outfits and adventures stories this week so stay tuned! Until then, XO

Home Again Home Again

Thursday, March 23, 2017

Hello all! I am writing this somewhere over the Atlantic as we fly back to the US from Rome. I can’t believe it’s already Thursday and we are already heading home. It has been a whirlwind week, but so amazing. It was so nice to be back in Rome, I had missed the city after living there for a month!
One of our first full days, we visited almost all of the sites of ancient Rome. We were exhausted, but had so much fun!
Kate and I had so much fun, as you might have seen from my instagram, but man, we did not stop for a second. Kate had never been to Rome, so I wan’t to make sure she saw all of the sights, plus I had quite a few art exhibition I wanted to see before coming home. To make sure we squeezed everything in, we really had to be efficient with our time, which was easy after planning our days in advance. Here is how we managed to see almost every major tourist attraction in Rome in five days without killing ourselves.
Pizza was a huge part of this experience as I ate it almost everyday. All of the ingredients are always so fresh and even the simplest pizza is delicious
The real key to our success was our location. We booked an Air BnB, which I highly recommend in Rome because you can get a great deal, in the heart of the city, almost spitting distance from the Pantheon. This put our home base in the middle of the city center, so most things were only a 15 minute or less walk away.
The highlight of this trip for me was the art. This statue is one of my favorite pieces and it was amazing being able to finally see it in person!
With our home base figured out, we basically picked a direction or a neighborhood to go in each day. This way, our activities throughout the day were fairly close together and we weren’t crisscrossing the city between sites.
This was my face a lot of days, whenever I got to see a new piece of art. The art history nerd in me was fan-girling the entire time to say the least.
To make this neighborhood plan work, it is really important to create a basic itinerary ahead of time so that you determine what you want to see in each neighborhood. Then, you don’t have to backtrack and you can see everything you want. This is pretty easy to do in Rome as a lot of sites are clustered together. For example, the Vatican and Castel Sant’Angelo are very close to each other and easy to do in one day. On the other hand, the Colosseum, Palantine Hill, and the Forum are also all close together and you can buy a ticket for all three for one rate. You don’t necessarily have to plan every day down to the hour, but having a general idea of what you want to do on each day can be extremely helpful.
Another highlight of this trip was the gelato. It always made the perfect afternoon snack and it is so fun experimenting with new flavor combinations!
In addition to the planning what day you want to visit sites, a lot of the main sites have odd hours, random days they are closed, or really long lines for tickets. With the hours, simply looking things up ahead of time can save you a big headache and make your days move smoother. For the lines, the only place we really noticed this was the Vatican museums. However, if you payed five extra euros, you could buy your tickets online beforehand and virtually skip all of the lines. I would highly recommend this as the line to buy tickets looked to take a couple of hours and we walked right in. Definitely worth the five extra euros!

After living in Rome, this city will always be near and dear to me. There is just something about a city with that much history and art that is overwhelming and magical. Our trip was absolutely amazing and I couldn’t have asked for a better travel partner. If you have any questions about visiting Rome or about our trip, please comment or email me! I would love to answer all of your questions. Until next time, XO
This trip was absolutely amazing, but it would not have been the same without my best friend Kate. Thank you for letting me drag you around to all of my art exhibitions! You were the best travel companion!

Knit and Simple

Thursday, March 16, 2017

We have spent the last couple of months talking about how to wear turtlenecks in creative ways. But, one of the best ways to wear a turtleneck is all by itself. This is the perfect time to wear a big, knit turtleneck. There is no room for a necklace or big earrings, but you don't need them when you have a big turtleneck to make a statement.
If I am wearing a turtleneck as a statement piece, I like to emphasize the turtleneck. With a big neck, like this, that is easy to do by simple pulling your hair back. Of course, I couldn't resist adding a little sparkle with these small bauble earrings.
With a bulky sweater like this, I like to keep the rest of my outfit stream-lined and classic with cuffed dark jeans and small black heels.

Turtleneck Thursdays are probably going to be ending soon as the weather warms up. But not to worry! They will be back in the fall! Next time you hear from me, I'll be in Rome! XO

Sparkles and Sweets

2017, winter, OOTD, sugarfina, food, sparkly, pink, , burgundy, , turtleneck,

For my birthday a couple of weeks ago, my wonderful boyfriend gave me these awesome cocktail-infused gummies from Sugarfina. I have mentioned them a couple of times before (here and here) as I have been admiring them from afar for a few years. Now That I have tried them, I can tell you that they taste even better than they look!
2017, winter, OOTD, sugarfina, food, sparkly, pink, , burgundy, , turtleneck,

The champagne and rose flavors are distinct in the gummy bears, but delicious. And the peach bellini hearts might be my new favorite candy! To say I am obsessed would be an understatement. Definitely check out their website as they have something for everyone. The ones I really want to try next are these dark chocolate champagne bears
2017, winter, OOTD, sugarfina, food, sparkly, pink, , burgundy, , turtleneck,

As with most things in my life, eating these gummies made me feel a certain way and influenced my outfit. In this case, an outfit with girl pinks and burgundies and lots of sparkles. This sweater has become one of my favorite pieces in my wardrobe. Like many pieces I own, I bought it as a statement piece, but it has fit so seamlessly into my closet. It goes with so many other pieces I already owned and it is super easy to layer.
2017, winter, OOTD, sugarfina, food, sparkly, pink, , burgundy, , turtleneck,

So, moral of today's post? Go buy Sugarfina candy and statement pieces that are the same color palette as the majority of your wardrobe! Until next time, XO

And Off We Go!

Tuesday, March 14, 2017

travel, personal, 2017, Hello all! As I mentioned yesterday, I have some very exciting pieces of news that I will be sharing over the next couple of weeks, and the first one we are talking about today! On Friday, I will be setting off for an adventure in Rome with my best friend, Kate! I am so excited to be going back to Italy where I am just going to look at art and eat pizza and gelato all day! Not to worry, I will be posting all about my activities and there will be lots of pictures of food!
In the meantime, I wanted to talk a little about packing. Packing can be very hard and there is no secret tip on the perfect way to pack because it is all dependent on your style and the trip itself. But, I wanted to share some of my tips that always work for me.

1. The key to bringing the most stuff, but not the most bags is making use of your space. For me, that first means rolling my clothes. This saves space and also prevents creases. Secondly, make use of your shoes and purses. I always store socks, scarves, jewelry, and other small items in my packed shoes and purses. This prevents wasting that space and helps keep me organized once I arrive.
2. Really, if you aren't traveling somewhere you know it will be hot, layering is key. To layer successfully, there are 2 main aspects:
- Make sure most of the things you are bringing match. This doesn't mean you can only wear neutrals, just make sure the color palettes mesh well. That way, if it is freezing, you can easily add another layer.
- The second piece of this is outerwear. In Rome, the highs are in the low 60s, but at night it'll be in the low 50s. So I am bringing a warmer coat that is water-proof to help with wind and potential rain, my fuzzy vest to keep me cozy, a blanket scarf, and then light layers and sweaters. That way, if it gets warmer during the day, I can take off layers, but I also won't freeze.
travel, personal, 2017,

I am so excited about this trip as I am long overdue for a vacation. If you have any suggestions for things we should do in Rome, make sure to comment below. Until next time, XO

Clean-cut and Classic

Monday, March 13, 2017

OOTD, winter, spring, 2017, classic, LBD, cheetah,

Hello all! Happy Monday! If you've been following along here at Lefty Living Life for awhile, you will have noticed that I learn towards classic feminine pieces for my every day look. Classic shapes and styles have always been my go-to no matter what the occasion.
OOTD, winter, spring, 2017, classic, LBD, cheetah,

However, now that I am wearing skirts and dresses every day for work, it has been fun to further expand my wardrobe!
OOTD, winter, spring, 2017, classic, LBD, cheetah,

For me, the most classic pieces are a trench coat, a white-button down, and a black dress and I love how they all came together with this outfit. This trench coat is one of my favorite pieces in my wardrobe because it is the epitome of style and class especially since it is Ralph Lauren. What I love most about it though is that it was my first consignment purchase!

OOTD, winter, spring, 2017, classic, LBD, cheetah,

This dress is a great black-dress staple because it is versatile. The buttons make it so you don't have to wear a big necklace and it is a thicker material so I've worn it by itself with flats in the summer or easily layered, like I did here.

OOTD, winter, spring, 2017, classic, LBD, cheetah,

Finally, the white-button down. If you don't already have a white-button down, I would seriously consider investing in one. They add a tailored, finished look with a pair of jeans and flats and are perfect to layer under a sweater or dress when it is cooler. As someone who is always cold, but who doesn't like shapeless sweaters, a button-down is a key layering piece for me.

OOTD, winter, spring, 2017, classic, LBD, cheetah,

As with any outfit, the key to making it awesome is how you accessorize. Cheetah print heels are always a great piece to add to a simpler dress. If your cheetah print has brown and black in it, add a brown bag to your outfit to tie in that brown from your shoes. Until next time, XO

A little candor, a few sparkles, and a lot of style

Wednesday, March 8, 2017

Hello all! Outfit posts are officially back after a brief exciting! However, I do want to take this opportunity to open up a little bit and be straight with y'all. Sure, last week was super crazy at work so I didn't really have any time to photograph outfits, write posts, or do bloggy things. Sometimes life just gets in the way of your plans.

But, when I take blogging breaks, it's not always just because I'm busy. Here on Lefty Living Life, what you see is what you get. None of my photos are edited- that is really what I look like. My outfits are ones I have worn all day through work or hanging out and I only post the ones I love. Everything I write about is something I love and care about.

With that said, sometimes things don't work out. I don't get home until after dark or my outfit doesn't work that day so I don't have pictures. Or I'm in a bad mood or am not feeling inspired so I don't want to write a blog post. The moral of the story is I'm not perfect and neither is this blog. But being perfect isn't the goal. Making mistakes and being a real person to connect with are more important to me than perfection. Thank you to all of you who read, visit, and like the blog. Y'all make this fun and inspiring everyday so thank you for sticking with me!

This outfit is full of my favorite things. This t-shirt and necklace combination is my go-to for any situation because it is comfy and always works well. This purse is the perfect statement piece for any outfit- no ifs, ands or buts. This skirt, I love so much I have it in this color AND black. Finally, these shoes. They are technically rain boots, but they are so perfect that I wear them all the time. When you bring together a bunch of pieces you adore, I call it a power outfit. You stand a little taller and strut your stuff a little more when you wear it. Just what I needed after a rough week. Until next time, XO
