SAG Awards Red Carpet

Monday, January 30, 2017

Hello all! Another award show, another red carpet and last night at the SAG Awards was no exception! There were some really interesting looks and here are my favorites!

Earlier this month, Evan Rachel Wood said she was only going to wear suits this year on the red carpet and if she keeps wearing ones like this, I can't wait! She looks incredible in a suit and they are always tailored to a T. I love this blue velvet look too!

Kirsten Dunst has never really been on my radar, but I love this simple silhouette and layered necklace. This is also an outfit that I can see myself wearing if I was ever on the red carpet.

I am so glad that Michelle Dockery is back on the red carpet. She is always one of my favorite people to watch. I love this look because it is simple silhouette, but the colors are so bold, especially for the red carpet when people normally stick to blue, red, and neutrals. Also, great choice by her to keep her hair and jewelry simple.

Taraji P. Henson stole the show last night if you ask me. Her acceptance speech was emotional and poignant and she looked incredible. Although this dress is a little revealing for my taste, it does an excellent job of juxtaposing a girly princess with a more scandalous look. Not something I would wear, but that does not mean it is not an incredibly beautiful dress.

I adore Viola Davis and she looked stunning. Sometimes a simple dress is the answer, especially when it is cut right. This is the perfect example. Viola didn't need to do anything else to look flawless. This is what a classy red carpet look is all about.

Well, those are my favorites! What did you guys think? Any thoughts? Until next time, XO!

Graphic Winter White

Hello! I'm sorry I was so incognito this week! We were crazy busy at work and I've been sick- definitely not a good combo, but I'm back now! I hope you had an easier week then me.
So, as I've mentioned a few times this winter, I've been working on practicing what I preach and wearing more white after Labor Day i.e. winter white. It has been so fun experimenting especially now that I have this white skirt. However, I know that experimenting isn't for everyone, so I've been brainstorming ways to make winter whites easier and more accessible. This outfit, for example, is incredibly easy to replicate because a white skirt and a black shirt is an easy and timeless combination. Now, a white base is also perfect for a sweater that feels too dark with a black or navy base. Take this sweater...with a black skirt or jeans, it looks washed out and boring. I've been struggling to find a cute way to wear it for months. But the white from the skirt really makes the pattern pop. For me, the key with winter white is to use it as an accent piece instead of another neutral.
Don't be afraid to try it and if you are nervous, start easy with a black shirt (perfect time for a turtleneck!) and a statement necklace. Until next time, XO.

Turtleneck Thursday: The Base Layer to Your Statement Pieces

Hello all! Happy Thursday, my favorite day of the week because we get to talk about turtlenecks. Last week, we took a little break because my grandmother came to town and family hang-outs come first. But now, we are back with one of my favorite turtleneck looks. This look is actually from over a year ago, but is still one of the best ways to wear a turtleneck. I always struggle in the winter to wear a dress because I get so cold. I end up throwing on a sweater and completely obscuring the dress with my layers. While the bundled sweater dress is a great look, sometimes you actually want to show your dress!
I was in that exact position with this dress. It has some interesting detail in the back and doesn't look great with a sweater because it flares so much. But without another layer, I would have had bare arms and would have been freezing. A turtleneck is the perfect solution. It gives you that extra layer of warmth, plus a black one against a patterned dress like this really makes the dress pop.
Moral of the story? Turtlenecks don't have to be the statement piece of your outfit. Instead, they can be the perfect base layer to highlight your statement piece. Until next time, XO.

Giving Graphic Sweaters that Extra Oomph

Patterned and graphic sweaters are one of my favorite things. They are so fun and it is so easy to throw one on with a pair of jeans and be done. But, after awhile, even that can be boring. So, I am always looking for ways to mix up my sweater and jeans go-to. An easy change can be trading in your jeans for a skirt. Try a solid colored skirt that looks good with the colors of your sweater, but choose one that has a fun cut so you don't look frumpy with your sweater. I like a bit of a flare with my skirt so that you don't have an awkward sweater bulge from where you tucked it in. The other great part about adding a skirt is that you don't have to change your shoes. Keep your boots or whatever you were wearing with your jeans. They will still look just as good.
So, once you've added a skirt, if you still want to mix it up, add some jewelry. It doesn't have to be super fancy or colorful. As long as it is a little sparkly, it'll add that extra "oomph" you've been looking for! If you ever have questions about how to wear a piece or anything else, don't hesitate to comment or email. I'd love to hear from you. Until next time, XO

Sometimes, I have outfit days where everything just works for one reason or another. This outfit, for example. All of the pieces don't necessarily match or look good together. But somehow, when you put it all on, it works. I am a firm believer that if two pieces don't look good at first, adding a third component can make it better. A lot of times, this leads me to piling on bunches of pieces and eventually starting over completely. With this outfit though, everything worked the first time and I absolutely love it.
I hope you enjoyed your Martin Luther King Jr. Day! Until next time, XO.

Hats are one of my favorite winter items. Second only to turtlenecks if we are being honest and I actually started wearing both around the same time. It seems so long ago that I had short hair but for six years, I had a pixie or a very short bob. When it comes to winter, if you don't have hair covering your neck and ears, you have to get really creative with your clothes to stay warm. Now I love scarves as much as the next person, but they can get boring and be a little cumbersome. However, hats, like turtlenecks are the perfect way to keep your neck and ears warm while also staying stylish. This hat is the newest addition to my collection and I absolutely love it. It is from my most recent Box of Style and you can see some of the other pieces I got in it here. I hope y'all have had a wonderful week and happy weekend! Until next time. XO

Golden Globes 2017 Red Carpet

Monday, January 9, 2017

Finally! A Red Carpet I can get behind! I have been struggling with red carpets so much lately because I have not been a fan of many of the dresses. However, at the Golden Globes last night, everyone really pulled out the stops and I had a hard time narrowing it down to these seven looks. Congratulations to everyone who was nominated last night and everyone really did look fabulous on the red carpet. Here are my favorite looks. I would love to hear if y'all have any additions to the list! XO

Turtleneck Thursday: The Top Knot

Top 10: January 3, 2017

Tuesday, January 3, 2017

Hello all! I can't believe it is already 2017, but I am already excited for this year. If you aren't already a part of our email list, make sure to sign up so that you can keep up with all the exciting activity here in 2017.

1. Many of you might not know this, but I am an avid baker and for many years had aspirations of being a pastry chef. Sadly those dreams weren't meant to be, but I still love to bake. This year for Christmas, I made these sprinkle cookies with Christmas sprinkles and decorations for my friends. These are some of the best cookies I've ever made and they are always a hit!

2. Peppermint Brownies
In addition to sprinkle cookies, I also made peppermint brownies on my time off and they were to die for! This is such a solid brownie recipe and not too difficult. For half the batch, I substituted dark chocolate chips for the white chocolate the recipe calls for. What a delicious addition! Definitely one of my all time favorite brownie recipes.

3. I love anything sparkly, especially nail polish. I just got this color and I am already obsessed. It is not just sparkly, but also paints on as a solid color, which I love.
4. I have always been a fan of historical tv shows and I CAN NOT wait for this new one to come out!

5. One of our last top 10s was all about the music I've been listening to lately. One of the songs, Closer by Chainsmokers and Halsey, has been stuck in my head regularly for the past couple of months. This song has been crazy popular in general and has led to a lot of covers. My favorite is this one. Listen and let me know what you think!

6. You have probably noticed that I haven't been wearing as many bracelets lately. This is not so much a style choice as a necessity with my job. However, I always have a watch and a hairband around my wrist. For Christmas, my sister got me this awesome bracelet that has a groove for your hairband. This way, you never lose it and your hair band is now an awesome accessory!

7. My best friend Kate now lives in Missouri instead of across the hall in my apartment. So to keep up with each other, we started a bookclub. Our first book was Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari and now are reading Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. It took me a while to get into the book, but once I did, I could barely put it down! I can't wait to start the show, has any one already seen it? What did you think of it?

8. As you saw on Sunday, I finally took the plunge and am now obsessed with my over the knee boots. Get ready, because they will be making a lot of appearances in my winter wardrobe!

9. If you aren't already sick of champagne from all of your New Year's Eve activities, try these champagne gummy bears.  I haven't had the chance to try these yet, but I've been dying to! Have y'all ever had them?

10. I am an obsessive Vogue reader. I am normally a month or two behind, but I love reading through all the articles and seeing the fashion ideas. Michelle Obama was on the cover of December's Vogue and her spread was just incredible. If you haven't already read it, I would highly recommend it!

Until next time! XO
