My obsession with glasses

Friday, July 25, 2014

My current frames
As you may know, I work in a shop that sells glasses. Recently, my boss asked me to write a blog post for her website about glasses and my obsession with them. Check out the blog here and read the blog post below! XO

I have always wanted glasses; my parents wore glasses, all of my favorite book characters wore glasses, Clark Kent occasionally wore glasses- they were cool and I wanted them. My wish came true when I was ten years old. They figured out that the reason why I couldn’t pass an English test, but was reading college level books was because I couldn’t see the board to take notes.
I finally had my first pair of glasses! I was so excited because I could read street signs and big bulletin boards. However, my frames were horrendous. They were small, this weird purple/ brown color, and they didn’t fit my face or my head AT ALL. I was constantly pushing them up my nose and peering through the tiny frames.
When my parents figured out that I wasn’t really a contact person, my mom decided to take me to her nice glasses store so I could get some good quality frames. That was when I met Becky and I was blown away. I was twelve by this point and thought Becky was the bee’s knee. She owned her own store and she got to bring her dogs to work! Plus, like all of my other heroes, she wore glasses.
I was sold almost immediately. My first pair of glasses from The View were pink. And not a pale, quiet pink, but hot, punch you in the face pink. They were absolutely marvelous and I wore them for years after. Since that first pair, years ago, I have continued to be a loyal customer of The View. Going down to 327 S Elm now feels like returning home. Whenever I am home from college, I always go down to The View to say hi and just to hang out. I now work at The View part time, but I am still blown away by new frames every day and I always leave a summer at The View with a new pair.

Whether you have always been obsessed with glasses, like me, or not, there is no excuse for bad glasses. They are probably the first thing people see when they meet you. If you are willing to spend hundreds on suits, shoes, and outfits to make a good impression, why wouldn’t you want to spend the same on something that not only helps you see, but sits on your face? Go see Becky and start to make an amazing first impression every time.

An Unusual Parisian Experience- a last couple of thoughts about being abroad

Tuesday, July 22, 2014

I frantically tried to get my friend to call my phone, hoping the ring was on and my picture would pop up on caller id. I knew the man had taken my phone during the last jostle and with the smell of urine in the air and adrenaline pounding in my ears, I was praying I was making the right decision in confronting this man.
I had just arrived in Paris for the weekend and was trying to take the metro from the train station into the city. The Paris metro is known for its pickpockets and supposedly, the Parisian pickpockets are the best in the world. I wasn’t worried about this, as I have traveled frequently abroad and never had a problem. I definitely learned how talented the pickpockets are and this situation could have ended much worse.
My friend called my phone and my personalized ring tone sang out through the metro car. Two American girls standing behind the pickpocket and his accomplice called out that they saw my phone. With the help of a Parisian father, I blocked the door to the train until the pickpocket gave back my phone before running off.
Before this incident on the metro, I didn’t have a very positive view of Paris or Parisians. However, after this, my entire opinion has changed. The local Parisians on the metro had not hesitated to support me and force the pickpocket to give back my phone. The common stereotypes that Parisians hate Americans and are unfriendly were completely disproven by this considerate father and the other commuters. As horrible as this was, it was a once in a lifetime experience that taught me so much about the world and myself.
This knowledge came rushing back when I was in Rome this past month. There were pickpockets everywhere and I never felt like I could put my guard down. Every time someone bumped into me I checked my bag to make sure it was still closed and everything was still inside. How easily one experience on the metro could change my entire attitude.
While in Rome, a friend was telling me about her experience at the Papal audience. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions and religious experiences in Rome and a target rich environment for pickpockets.
As my friend was waiting for the Pope to come over and bless her, she heard screams of “Stop!” all around her. A pickpocket had stolen a tourist’s passport and was being chased by the police through St. Peter’s Square. The pickpocket was tackled to the ground and the passport was returned.
Upon hearing this story, I was overwhelmed with the shock and nervousness I had felt in Paris and was thankful I had been able to recover my phone. Being pickpocketed can happen to anyone, even the most experienced traveler. I have learned that the key is to move past the experience and grow. Whether your personal items are recovered or not, don’t let the experience ruin your trip. Instead grow from it. From my trip on the metro, I learned that I am a fighter not a runner and I am strong enough to stand up for myself.  I wouldn’t wish being pickpocketed on anyone, but by having my phone stolen, I grew up and became a stronger person.

Movie Marathon Weekend

Sunday, July 20, 2014

This weekend my mom was away at running camp so it was just me, my sister, and my Dad. The perfect entertainment for Father/Daughters weekend is a movie marathon, so we decided to watch Star Wars, Episodes 1-6 over the course of the three days. At first, this seemed a little daunting, but it worked out perfectly and we even finished ahead of schedule! I am a huge nerd and absolutely adore Star Wars as does my sister and father so we had an amazing time! It was an excellent way to spend a weekend and some much needed downtime after a tiring week.
The perfect outfit for a movie marathon is comfortable jeans, a tshirt, and tennis shoes. I always shower and put on something other than pajamas so I feel like a real person and don't melt into the couch. What are your favorite movies to marathon? XO

Good Morning! As you know, I have been traveling A LOT recently. While I was off having adventures, a friend here at home, Adeline Talbot, contacted me about writing a post for her travel blog and it was published today! Check it out here and let me know what you think! It is so exciting to finally have some of my work published! Hope you have an excellent Tuesday XO

The lace detail in the back is so subtle, but awesome, Dress: Anthropologie has great sales (This dress was $40 off) so make sure to check out the sale room! Bag: My favorite tote bag from Madewell, Shoes: I bought these shoes in Greece, but there are some cute ones from Madewell here!

Peplum for a night out

Monday, July 14, 2014

One of my friends from London came to visit me this weekend! We had a lovely dinner and were able to catch up. It was great to see her after being apart for so long! I love going out for dinner because it is a great opportunity to try new outfits. You only have to wear the outfit for a limited time and you are siting down for most of it, so if it's not comfortable, you don't have to wear it all day. It is also nice in the summer to go out for dinner because it is a welcome change from monotonous shorts and a good time to try jeans or a dress. Also, most days here, it is too hot to wear a lot of jewelry, but I can pile it on at night! XO

Bow Necklace: A new addition to my jewelry collection from Gorjana-Griffin, Initial Necklace: from a local store here in Greensboro with great monogram and personalized things, Tassel Necklace: Another new addition to my jewelry; I love the tassels! Top, Jeans, Shoes

Denim on Denim

Sunday, July 13, 2014

The key to wearing denim on denim is to make sure that you wear different shades. I like to wear a lighter shade on top and then darker jeans. With opposite shades, your outfit will look less like a denim jumpsuit and more like an awesome outfit! XO

GlassesShirt: I love this shirt because the sleeves are extra long so even cuffed, it looks casual and boyish, Clutch: My new book clutch! I waited for it to be on sale, and got a great deal! JeansShoes

Girly Pink and Bows

Thursday, July 10, 2014

Now that I am back at work, I finally have an excuse to wear dresses everyday! I love this dress because it is  very comfortable and so easy to wear. Even without a lot of accessories, this dress is still eye-catching because it is such a bright color and the bow in the back is so unexpected. Have a great Thursday! XO

Glasses, Necklace, Dress, Shoes- These are no longer sold, but here are some other spiky flats

A perfect summer outfit

Tuesday, July 8, 2014

Good morning! I love Mondays because I always have off work. Yesterday was an especially good Monday because my sister is finally out of school and we are both home. So, we had sister date day as we call it. Basically it is just an excuse to hang out and get Starbucks, which is always fun. We had a great time and I tried something new st Starbucks- a blackberry mojito tea lemonade. It wasn't very sweet, just minty and refreshing. Definitely something to try if you like mint! What do you do for fun on your days off? XO

Sunglasses, Necklace: I love these colored bead because they add that extra pop of color, Top: this top is cut a little weird, but it is great for hot summer days, Shorts: the perfect summer shorts, Shoes: I love these shoes because your toes peak through. They are also extremely comfortable, Purse: This was my big Christmas present this year. It is a vintage Chanel bag that my parents got pretty reasonably at an auction, Bracelet: from J.Crew, a great sparkly staple

Blueberry Picking and new sparkles

Saturday, July 5, 2014

I hope everyone had a good 4th and a great start to your weekend. Because it is officially summer and  therefore blueberry season, Mom and I went blueberry picking today. If you haven't been blueberry picking, I would really recommend it. I don't even like blueberries and I had fun! It is really easy to pick blueberries and they aren't expensive. In summertime especially, I love being outside and doing fun activities and this is the perfect opportunity. Do you have any other fun summertime activities for me to try? XO
Sunglasses: Both are from my favorite glasses place, The View on Elm, Necklace: I don't think they still sell this at BaubleBar, but I absolutely love it. BaubleBar is a great store for inexpensive statement jewelry and they have great sales regularly, Shirt: This is a Lilla P t-shirt, which are great casual t-shirts. I get all of my tanks from them, Shorts: My shorts of the summer- I think I bought them in every color, Sandals: My mom picked these up in the Anthro sale room. They are kind of hard to walk in, but so cute and sparkly Toenail Polish: OPI Red Hot Rio, my new favorite color

Red, White, and Blue for America's Birthday!

Friday, July 4, 2014

Happy 4th of July! The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays because it is a quintessential summer holiday. There are fireworks, pool parties, and my favorite part.. barbecue! The Fourth is always so fun and this year has been even better because today feels like the true beginning of summer- I am no longer writing papers or getting grades, the weather is perfect, and I am hanging out with my family. The Fourth is one of the few holidays where I go all out outfit wise- there can never be enough red, white, and blue. I hope y'all have had an amazing start to your July and are enjoying your 4th of July. XO

Shirt: I call this my pirate shirt because it is so loose, but it is extremely comfortable and great for all this hot weather, Sunglasses: These sunglasses are so classic and perfect for every situation, Shorts: I 'borrowed' these shorts from my mom and I don't think I can ever give them back! They are so comfortable and add a little pop to a plain t-shirt, Shoes: A new purchase this summer that are already replacing my Toms and Rainbows, Purse: I bought this purse for traveling abroad, but it has proved to be an amazing statement bag! Jewelry: Jewelmint, David Yurman, Stella and Dot, Nail Polish: OPI Lost on Lombard and OY- Another Polish Joke
